21 Day Pescatarian Diet Experience 

Can you give up meat for 3 weeks? Just think about it, no meat at all for 3 weeks, no burgers , no wings, no turkey bacon, no ribs. I did and I am sharing with you my experience.

For those of you that don’t know what a pescetarian diet is:

Pesce, the Italian word for fish, is being associated with people who add aquatic animals to a vegetarian diet. Pescetarians (sometimes called pesco-vegetarians) eat freshwater and saltwater fish and shellfish in addition to the fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, eggs, and dairy vegetarians typically consume.– Today’s Dietian

My trainer came up with the challenge in July to help a student play football. The catch was that if any one of his clients slip up during the challenge they would need to add $2 the jar. The money would go towards football equipment.

What the rules were is that you could only eat fish, seafood, vegetable and fruit. As far as snacks you can eat dry foods like peanuts/trail mix. You can only eat between the hours of 5am-8pm.

I’m going to tell you what a typical day for me is as far as my meals go and then I will tell you what changes I had to make for the diet.

Breakfast: turkey bacon (3) , turkey sausage (3) , French toast (2) , and scrambles eggs with cheese with 8 oz orange juice.

Lunch: Mediterranean Chicken Salad , Medium Lemonade. 

Dinner: Chipotle Chicken Bowl with everything in it. Some evenings I would have baked chicken breast with roasted red potatoes and snap peas.

Snacks–throughout the day: Greek yogurt , Nature’s Valley Granola Bar (2) , fruit cup.

Now I had to adjust and try new things that I’ve grown to enjoy. I did some research on Pinterest  to see what meals I could make. This also made me start to prepare my lunches the night before, for work.

Breakfast: cheese omelet, (1) banana. If I’m at work I would eat 1 packet of Quakers Protein Cranberry Almond Oatmeal.

Lunch: Baked Tilapia (4 oz), asparagus.

Dinner: Baked Salmon , 1 cup of steamed mixed vegetables, brown rice.

Snacks throughout the day: Nature Valley Trail Mix soft & chewy bar (1), planters peanuts, Quakers Rice Cake (1) .

Now I log all of my meals on the MyFitnessPal app on my phone since Day 1 of working out. When you create a profile, you include your weight and height and it will provide you with your daily calorie intake limit. It even tells you when you’re due for a weigh in. I am 5’4 and I weigh 135lbs my calorie intake should be 1440 a day. Some days I go over and some days I don’t eat enough. With this diet it was hard to eat 1440 in calories especially working out 3 days a week, but I tried to at least intake 1000 calories.

Trust and believe this was not a walk in the park for my greedy self. The first week I was craving all types of crappy foods. Preparing my meals and adding snacks to that , helped me while I was at work. Having a desk job it is very easy to just always have food at your desk and next thing you know you’ve gained 30lbs. My job always has someone ordering food or bringing in snacks for the department, I had to turn down a few times. I am also the type who has to have something to eat while I’m watching my favorite show, so I would just grab some fruit like sliced apples or cherries.

They say if you do something for 21 days it can become a habit. The first week after completing the diet I wanted everything but since I hadn’t had meat for while I didn’t want to rush into it and become sick. I had gone out for drinks with a friend and I ordered 5 hot wings combine with 5 honey barbecue wings, I only ate 6 and I was fine. To be honest after that it just wasn’t fulfilling where I felt like I was missing out. I love Burgatory turkey burgers and the salted caramel pretzel milkshake but I have yet to go there. I’ve gone to two cookouts this summer and I’ve only ate the side dishes, no meat.

What I can say is I’ve had more energy, I felt less tired. After eating a meal I was full but I didn’t want to take a nap right after as you would a full steak meal. Now when I go grocery shopping I don’t even go to the meat section. So for me, being as though I have a cheat day once every two weeks that will probably be when I eat meat , pizza, and other bread based foods (bagels, donuts).
