February marks the two-year hair-versary since my second big chop. Right now I consider myself being in that awkward stage during my hair journey and it’s making me want to do another big chop. The keyword during your hair journey is patience.
The other day I watched old videos of one of my favorite hair bloggers Mahogany Curls. She big chopped back in 2008, that’s 10 years ago. She was one of the first people I came across on YouTube when I did my first big chop in 2013. She solely does wash N goes and she would only co-wash her hair, following Lorraine Massey’s Curl Girl Method.
If you’re not familiar with the Curly Girl Method, · The Curly Girl Method, from Lorraine Massey’s book “Curly Girl: The Handbook,” is a hair care method that trades in damaging habits (like shampooing and heat styling) for a healthy curly hair regimen using just conditioner and gel.-Curly Nikki
During my hair journey I would only use shampoo once a month and every other day or twice a week I would co-wash my hair meaning only cleansing my hair with a conditioner. Recently I’ve been using the Deva Curl products which are great for curly haired individuals.
As I hesitantly embrace my awkward stage I dislike my wash N go especially the second day. I was tired of the twists outs and braid outs being a fail. My go-to hairstyle would be two braids.i was over it all. I went back to the drawing board and decided to watch more tutorials of how to maintain my wash N go.
One of the things Jessica (Mahogany Curls) said in her video is that what works for you may not work for someone else and vice versa. She also stated she doesn’t like to use a lot of products at one time in her hair either. I can say personally I would use at least 3 products especially for the L.O.C. method.
One of the brands I used religiously after my big chop was Shea Moisture. What I used for my wash N go was the Shea Moisture Curl Moisture Co-Wash which is available at all drugstores including Target. For the leave in conditioner I used Shea Moisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Leave-In treatment. I opted out of the curl milk or curl smoothie and used the Eco Style Black Castor Flaxseed Oil Gel for my styler.
At night I put on a bonnet and in the morning I wet my hair using a spray bottle filled with water and scrunched my hair and used a cotton t-shirt so that my hair isn’t dripping wet and let it air dry. I was so happy it worked although my hair isn’t that long I was still able to turn to each side and scrunch my hair. I didn’t use any tools for styling.
This is the day 2 results
My hair isn’t crunchy or hair, the gel has my curls poppin’ and I will do this every morning to refresh my wash N go. So ladies don’t be alarmed if your hair is smashed or flat from your bonnet when you spray with water and scrunch and your hair will be vibrant!
Let me know how you refresh your wash N go and what products you use.
